What is the ideal dimension of a joint?
Joint sealants can only reach their full potential if they comply with a minimum and maximum width. We recommend never applying an elastic joint narrower than 3 mm or wider than 20 mm for acrylates, 30 mm for silicones and 50 mm for Parabond Construction.
For acrylic sealants, the joint depth = joint width.
Deep joints can be filled with a back filler first if necessary.
For silicone joint sealants, consider the following diagram for joint dimensions
Joint width |
Joint depth |
Allowed difference |
3-4 mm | 3-4 mm | 1 mm |
6 mm | 6 mm | 1 mm |
8 mm | 8 mm | 1 mm |
10 mm | 6-8 mm | 2 mm |
15 mm | 10 mm | 2 mm |
20 mm | 10-12 mm | 2 mm |
25 mm | 15 mm | 3 mm |
30 mm | 18 mm | 3 mm |
